Speaking topics include but are not limited to:
Autism before autism
My first diagnosis was "severe learning disability." This was a time when autism diagnoses were reserved for those who could not speak. I knew I was different than other kids, but I just thought I was weird, stupid and uncoordinated. And even after being diagnosed, I was never told what autism entailed. Growing up as a child with autism is difficult, but it doesn't have to be.
I joined the MGM training program in Las Vegas, where I was socially unequipped to handle the challenges of the work environment. Although I voluntarily left the program, my experiences there were enlightening and comedic. They put me in a unique position to help companies empower their autistic workers and educate their non-autistic employees.
Autism in the Workplace
Finding Hope
Where does someone go after they have "played by the rules" for 25 years and lost hope? We are all good at something; we just have to find out what it is. My journey led me to writing and speaking about autism.
Everyone talks about the importance of exercise and physical health. Discussions about problems resulting from obesity, smoking, or drug abuse are commonplace. Yet discussion of mental health often still seems somewhat taboo. Those with mental health issues often feel alone, misunderstood or forgotten. The stigma that is often attached to those with mental health issues must be lifted. This can only happen if discussion of mental health issues is brought into the light.
